Portland Public Schools is undertaking a districtwide rightsizing process to better align our schools, programs, and resources with the needs of today’s students and the realities shaping our future.
Since 2012, PPS has completed over 1100 health, safety and modernization projects that have improved every school in the district. This work on our aging school buildings has improved water quality, and provided security upgrades, new roofs, asbestos and radon remediation, lead paint stabilization, new fire alarms and sprinklers, more accessibility and seismic retrofits.
Nine schools: Benson, Franklin, Grant, McDaniel, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Kellogg MS, Faubion PK-8 and the new Multiple Pathways to Graduation program building have been modernized or rebuilt. Work is underway on three more modernized schools: Jefferson, Cleveland and Ida B. Wells.

The Bond Accountability Committee (BAC) communicates key information related to the bond program to the School Board, public groups, organizations and stakeholders.
We know you are as excited as we are to see construction underway on the modernized Jefferson’s athletic fields. We’re still on track for the athletic fields to be complete in February 2027. Schedules are subject to change.
So what exactly is going on with those excavators, trenches and workers? Here’s a closer look at what’s been happening so far.
As we continue salvage and deconstruction work on Cleveland High School in preparation for the modernized campus, we are excited to announce an opportunity for community members to take a piece of the original, beloved building home. Join us to ‘Claim a Brick’ on September 26th from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. in the Cleveland parking lot on Franklin Street and 26th Avenue.
Construction on a modernized Ida B Wells is on track to start by the end of this semester! A groundbreaking ceremony will be held on Nov. 13. Keep an eye out for details!
